Olympic Esports Week Singapore 2023 - Event Report

Singapore hosted the first ever Olympic Esports Week (OEW) from June 22-25. The event was an innovative combination of Olympic disciplines and virtual sports and was held at the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre. The OEW featured 10 finals from the Olympic Esports Series 2023, where professional and amateur players from around the world competed in sports including archery, baseball, chess, cycling, dance, motorsport, shooting, taekwondo and tennis.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), in partnership with Singapore's Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, Sport Singapore and the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), welcomed the world to Singapore for this historic milestone, which marked the next step in promoting virtual sports within the Olympic Movement and further connecting with youth and the gaming community.

Panasonic, as TOP partner of the IOC, supported the event with its 30,000-lumen-class 3-Chip DLP™ 4K Projector and 12,000-lumen-class 1-Chip DLP™ projector, broadcast cameras during the Opening Ceremony and as well as its official Gaming Speaker “SoundSlayer”.

Visitors' experience

Some of Panasonic's Singapore employees had the chance to join the festivities and watch the exciting live competitions.

Check out some of their messages below:

“An amazing event where exhibition, sports and gaming came together to create an impressive show. Games with the latest innovations and sports technology were presented in the free-to-play zone. I tried the rowing machine and loved the immersive experience!”

Stanley Wong, Brand Management Department

“E-Sport is not only a game, but also a virtual version of a real sport. Seeing a retired Olympian (two-time Olympic taekwondo champion Wu Jingyu from China) come back and win a medal in e-sports made me feel that technological innovation is contributing to a great future.”

Duyhinh Nguyen, Manufacturing Innovation Center

“The event was very interesting! We were able to enjoy cycling, golf, bowling, etc., and learn how esports have evolved to include physical sports.”

Mei Iida, Panasonic Information Systems Co. AP

“It was a big difference having experienced the regular games before and now this first esports edition. The gaming dynamic has created a new dimension for the industry players and the audience, which I see young kids trying esports bowling like a pro.”

Junie Lim, Brand Management Department

“It was an interesting experience to see people from all walks of life trying out the different sports virtually with the help of technology and enjoying the experience. Sports, whether virtual or physical, is a lifestyle that brings people together.”

Mary Koh, Brand Management Department
