[Activity Report] Aiming to support women’s independence and girl’s health and well-being
The Panasonic Group has been working on “LIGHT UP THE FUTURE,” a project to bring light to off-grid communities that are unable to escape poverty due to a lack of light and electricity.
Together with the UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund), we donated 2,000 solar lanterns to off-grid areas in Kenya’s Samburu and West Pokot counties in October 2022. This collaborative project has the theme of “improved livelihoods for women, and educational and health outcomes for girls through activities that bring light." FGM (female genital mutilation) and child marriage are still common practices in Kenya, despite being prohibited by law. Our goal is to improve girl’s health by reducing their risks. Eight months to a year after our donation, a monitoring survey of local residents showed that girls had the opportunity to receive quality, equitable, as well as inclusive education, and that the production and marketing of beadwork made by women had increased by utilizing the solar lanterns.
The following report provides an overview of the project and details of the results.
