Did you know that Indonesia, like Japan, is a country prone to ear thquakes? These areas have suffered damage from ear thquakes in the past, and infrastructure restoration has not progressed, leading to continued power shortages. We hope that this donation of lanterns will help alleviate some of the inconvenience in their daily lives.

We received a picture of the donation from Renge International Volunteer Association (ARTIC) in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. The recipient is Beinekein Village, located in the mountainous area of southwestern Myanmar. The donation ceremony for the solar storage units was held at a local high school. At the donation ceremony, ARTIC staff member Zaw Lin distributed the solar storage units directly to the villagers. This time, a total of 140 units were donated, one for each household in Beinekein Village. The solar storage units delivered this time were not donated to the villagers free of charge, but 9,800 Kyat (about 500 yen) will be collected per month as a solar storage usage fee for two years. The purpose is to build a new library in the village to create educational opportunities for children. This is based on ARTIC's activity belief that we should not only receive charity from others, but also make efforts ourselves.

We donated 1,050 solar lanterns to Cambodia through the general incorporated foundation JELA .The recipients were four villages in Pursat and Bat tambang provinces in western Cambodia. These rural villages are about a day and a half away by road from the capital, Phnom Penh. There is no electricity in the villages, so they rely on kerosene and batteries for light sources such as lighting. Most of their income comes from selling agricultural products, and the household income level is 30 to 100 USD per month, far below the national average in Cambodia. Fur thermore, during the COVID-19 pandemic, children were unable to at tend online classes at school due to the lack of electricity, and learning opportunities were lost. In villages facing such circumstances, JELA worked with the Cambodian NGO Life With Dignity (LWD) to distribute solar lanterns to households with children and people with disabilities.

The recipient of this donation was Laing Kivav village in Pursat Province, Cambodia. It is afarming village with about 200 households, about a day and a half's drive from the capital, Phnom Penh. A handover ceremony was held at the village's elementary school, and th solar lanterns were distributed to 90 low-income h ouseholds and households with disabilities through Life with Dignity (LWD), an organization active in five provinces in Cambodia. The rate of students moving on to junior high school in Cambodia is about 17%, and many children, especially in rural areas, end up repeating their grades because they have to helpwith household chores. Given this situation, the solar lanterns will be used mainly at home for studying and reading at night.

Kenya

The off-grid solution has been launched in Kenya, the third country after Indonesia and Myanmar. The donation ceremony was held at an elementary school in Enkutoto district, Elangata-Entelit area, Narok Southern Subprefecture, and was attended by approximately 300 people, including officials and guests from the Kenyan government, the Japanese Embassy in Kenya, and the JICA Kenya office. The moment the switch of the solar power generation and storage system was flipped and the first lights were turned on in Enkutoto district, residents and children cheered. Panasonic will implement this project with World Vision Japan, a partner organization, for two years until September 30,2020. Through electrification of the district, income generation activities that utilize electricity, and night time literacy education, we will contribute to improving people's lives and the independence of the community.
