SPORTS CHANGE MAKERS “Going Beyond Barriers” SPORTS CHANGE MAKERS “Going Beyond Barriers”

Breaking down barriers in sports with technology.

In 2019, Panasonic launched the project “SPORTS CHANGE MAKERS” in cooperation with the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee to solicit ideas that will change the future through sports from students around the world. Our driving force was to make the world-famous Olympic and Paralympic Games the catalyst for building a better future together.

Under the theme “GOING BEYOND BARRIERS,” we looked for ideas to overcome various barriers in society using Panasonic’s audiovisual technology.

Qualifying rounds were held in Tokyo, Paris, Beijing and Los Angeles, the four cities hosting the Olympics and Paralympics. From among students who presented ideas for going beyond language, disability or other barriers, the Change Makers representing each region were selected.

The Final Presentation

The Change Makers representing the four regions worked on their ideas for about a year and a half for the Final Presentation, which was to be held at the same time as the Tokyo 2020 Games. However, the Final Presentation was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In spite of this unexpected obstacle, all of the Change Makers successfully put their ideas into concrete form.

Ultimately, the Final Presentation was held in the summer of 2021, one year behind the original schedule, at Panasonic Center Tokyo in Ariake, Tokyo. Participants from all over the world gathered online, and the students representing the four regions proudly presented the fruits of their labor on the day they had long been looking forward to. Even though it was livestreamed to the world, they undauntedly engaged in discussions with 13 advisors that included Olympians, Paralympians, personnel from Olympic/Paralympic-related organizations, and celebrities. Prototypes of the ideas presented by the students were created by the students themselves together with Panasonic’s support teams, and displayed at the venue. With shining eyes, all the students said that nothing made them happier than participating in the SPORTS CHANGE MAKERS project.
